Health Risk Map 2015
International SOS has published and released their 2015 international ‘Health Risk Map’. This map shows the best and worst countries around the world for emergency healthcare, and gives a visual representation of healthcare standards around the world. International SOS is a medical and travel security risk services company.
It is important to understand the varying degrees of healthcare around the world. When you travel internationally, whether for business or pleasure, knowing the availability of emergency healthcare and the type of medical facilities available in the location you will be travelling too can help you better prepare for your trip and any possible risks you may encounter.
There are often misconceptions about the risks one may face in international locations. For example, some of the most popular tourist destinations for holidays, including Mexico, Thailand and Egypt are actually medium to high risk locations in terms of healthcare quality and availability. Many individuals wrongly assume that if it’s a holiday hotspot than there will be quality medical facilities available similar to what they would be used to back home.
The health risk map ranks countries within five different categories, including low risk, medium risk, high risk, extreme risk and a new category for large, rapidly developing countries. A country’s risk category is determined by several factors, including the risk of accidents, hygiene and sanitation, infectious disease and the quality of the local health care. The new category for large, rapidly developing countries takes into account that medical care available in major cities versus the rest of the country can vary greatly, examples of these countries include China, India and Brazil.
So whether you are travelling on holiday or business, it is important to know the risks and available health care in the area you will be visiting. That way you can make sure you take out the right travel insurance or travel medical insurance policy to protect against the potential risks you may face.
